Collage was not on my radar until I began helping my 3 year old grandchild with cutting and pasting as part of her small motor skills development. I began seeing the potential of collage as a vehicle for healing; finding it relieving to cut shapes out of paper and arrange randomly. It felt GOOD. So I cut and pasted some more.
Eventually I began looking for marks to make that resonated my emotions. These marks became 'patterns' in the designs that began to emerge.
Early attempts at collage. making were very basic. In order to reduce stressing over an end product, I worked in an assembly- line fashion to generate as many different compositions as possible. This helped keep me from overthinking everything.
PAPER: Any type of paper works for collage making. I use Origami papers, tissue papers and hand died papers (see YouTube Video). I recommend a heavy card stock paper for your foundation (ground).
GLUE: Use matte medium or in a pinch, watered down Elmers Glue for attaching shapes to the foundation. Glue sticks are great for tacking down pieces.
PATTERN MAKING: POSCA pens dry fast, are not drippy and are a very good value for the money. They're the only pens I will use now that I've experimented with others. GEL PEN are great for smaller areas and details. I use white silver and gold uni-ball Signo.
SCISSORS: For scissors I went to the Dollar Tree and got a pair for $1. Enjoy and remember it's about finding your JOY.
